Under Role Info, create a role name. You should create four sets of roles: Read Only: Users under this role have only read access to the system. They can t create, edit, delete, or modify the system in any way. Restricted: You should allow a handful of methods for the restricted role. For example, you can allow the Account team access to only the sales_order methods. (This is discussed in more detail in the next section.) Custom: This role can be special set in which you can allow the public to see a listing of all your products. They can t view customer data, but inventory and catalogs are accessible. All Access: Users under this group can perform all API methods. Be careful about giving access to this role.

Note An alternative to the combination of a comment and a pass statement is to simply insert a string. This is especially useful for unfinished functions (see 6) and classes (see 7) because they will then act as docstrings (explained in 6).

Now we implement the administrator interface for managing books. For this, we need to first create a table for storing books in the database, and then create the ActiveRecord model for books. Although we found some issues with scaffolding while implementing the publisher administration functionality, it saved us some time and George was happy, so we ll continue using scaffolding to implement the book management administration functionality.

Once you click Role Resources on the left panel, you will see the list shown in Figure 11-1.

The first thing we need to do is to create a table for storing books in the database. Following the Rails naming conventions, we name the table books, and as usual, we ll update the database schema using ActiveRecord migrations.

Each environment and setup is different, but you should not give the All Access role to all your web services users. Magento has given you the ability to control access, so use it wisely.

Note the User Name and New Api Key (see Figure 11.2). They are used to authenticate with your Magento server before you can send commands.
